Istanbul Travel Guide

One of Istanbul's most iconic features is its stunning skyline adorned with magnificent landmarks. The historic district of Sultanahmet is home to world-famous architectural marvels such as the Hagia Sophia, a Byzantine masterpiece turned into a mosque and now a museum, and the majestic Blue Mosque with its intricate tilework and soaring minarets. The Topkapi Palace, once the residence of Ottoman sultans, showcases opulent chambers and beautifully manicured gardens. Pro tip - get the museum pass Istanbul for visiting the mosques and palace. It saved a ton of time not having to stand in numerous queues throughout the day.

Grand Bazaar and Spice Market

The Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar, offer a sprawling maze of covered markets, entices visitors with its vibrant displays of spices, textiles, and traditional handicrafts. The isles of vendors go on and on, just take your time and get lost in a sensory overload as you find the perfect stall to purchase delightful Baklava and exotic spices.

Beyond its historical treasures, Istanbul is a bustling, cosmopolitan city with a vibrant cultural scene. The Beyoglu district is a hub of modern art galleries, trendy boutiques, and lively nightlife. The famous Istiklal Avenue is a bustling pedestrian street lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants, while the Galata Tower offers panoramic views of the city. If you able to brave the heat, I highly recommend taking the trek across the river to visit this unique area of the city.

Water tour

The Bosphorus Strait, separating Europe and Asia, is a picturesque waterway where visitors can take scenic boat cruises to enjoy breathtaking views of the city's skyline and architectural wonders. This is a very fun way to see this enormous city and let your feet have a few moments of rest.

Sultanahmet, situated in Istanbul's historic peninsula, and I view it as the best area to stay in the city. This neighborhood offers a unique blend of history, culture, and convenience. Its central location allows visitors to easily explore Istanbul's iconic landmarks such as the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and Basilica Cistern, all within walking distance. We stayed at the very conveniently located Hotel Ibrahim Pasha. The hotel is literally a block away from all the above attractions. Upon arrival the concierge will sit down with you to orient you with the area and offer recommendations of how to make the best use of your time. We heavily relied on his map and plan.

The authentic ambiance of Sultanahmet, with its narrow streets, Ottoman-style houses, and charming cafes and restaurants, immerses visitors in the rich history and culture of Istanbul. The neighborhood also provides excellent access to public transportation, making it convenient to explore other parts of the city. Sultanahmet caters to diverse preferences and budgets, there are a wide range of hotels all over the area. Overall, Sultanahmet's central location, proximity to historical sites, unique atmosphere, and convenient transportation make it an ideal choice for travelers looking to delve into Istanbul's rich heritage.

My recommendation would be to eat at one of the numerous rooftop bar/restaurants in the Sultanahmet area. The ambiance and view of the city is amazing and worth looking for these little gems tucked into the hustle and bustle.

While out and about looking for a tasty place to eat, try any food stall or cart as you pass buy, you might be amazed at the new experiences you will be presented with.

Another must eat is Manti (basically a Turkish ravioli with a sour cream like sauce). Typically filled with lamb and adorned with chili powder, ground sumac, tomato sauce, garlicky yogurt, and hot butter, this dish is so satisfying and filling. To savor amazing manti, consider visiting renowned restaurants like Casita Mantı Nişantaşı, or Sayla Manti, Kadikoy
