Hike the Cocora Valley

The Cocora Valley (Valle de Cocora) is one of Colombia's most breathtaking natural wonders and a must-visit for anyone traveling to Salento. The valley is famous for its towering wax palms, the national tree of Colombia, which can reach heights of up to 60 meters (200 feet). Hiking trails in the Cocora Valley range from easy walks to more challenging treks, taking you through lush cloud forests, across rivers, and up to stunning viewpoints. Pro tip: you can go to the top of the road to start your walk.  It is a bit easier, and you can see the palm trees a bit earlier in the walk.

If you choose the bottom route follow along the creek most of the way, but keep your eyes out for the trail signs. It can be a bit confusing at times, so plan a bit longer than you think it will take. The popular loop trail includes a visit to Acaime, where you can see hummingbirds up close while enjoying a traditional Colombian hot chocolate served with cheese that you melt into the hot chocolate or coffee.

Visit a Coffee Farm

Salento is situated in the heart of Colombia’s coffee-growing region, making it the perfect place to learn about the coffee production process. Several coffee farms (fincas) offer tours where you can see firsthand how coffee is grown, harvested, and processed. El Ocaso and Finca Don Elias are two well-known coffee farms that provide informative tours and tastings. These tours often include a walk through the coffee plantations, a detailed explanation of the coffee-making process, and a chance to taste freshly brewed coffee straight from the source.

Explore Salento's Town Center

Salento’s town center is a delightful mix of colorful colonial architecture, artisan shops, and lively cafes. The main square, Plaza de Bolívar, is a great starting point for exploring the town. Here, you can find local vendors selling handcrafted goods, traditional food stalls, and the iconic jeeps (Willys) used for transport in the region. Stroll along Calle Real, the main shopping street, to browse local crafts, souvenirs, and coffee shops. Don’t miss the chance to try trucha (trout), a local specialty, at one of the many restaurants around the square.

Climb to the Alto de la Cruz Viewpoint

For a panoramic view of Salento and its surrounding landscapes, hike up to the Alto de la Cruz viewpoint. The climb involves ascending a series of steps from the town center, leading you to a cross (cruz) at the top of the hill. The effort is rewarded with stunning views of the lush green valleys, distant mountains, and the colorful town below. It’s a perfect spot for photography and to appreciate the natural beauty of the area.

The viewpoint is particularly breathtaking at sunrise or sunset when the light casts a golden hue over the landscape. Before or after your hike up the steps, visit the bar right at the bottom. It is lovely outdoor setting with nightly live music and wonderful mojitos.
