Whether you’re hiking up Queenstown Hill, tackling the full-day Ben Lomond Track, cruising on Lake Wakatipu, or taking a once-in-a-lifetime helicopter or small plane ride to Milford Sound, the region’s landscapes constantly leave you breathless. And in winter, Queenstown transforms into a snowy playground with access to some of the best ski fields in the country.

One of the top experiences is taking the Skyline Gondola to Bob’s Peak, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Queenstown and the surrounding landscapes. The ride itself is a scenic journey, but once at the top, the real fun begins. Thrill-seekers can hop on the luge, an exhilarating gravity-powered ride down winding tracks. It’s way more fun than it looks, and once you try it, you’ll likely want to go again. The combination of speed, stunning views, and sharp turns makes it a must-do activity. Afterward, relax with a drink at the mountain-top Stratosfare Restaurant & Bar while taking in one of the most scenic vistas in the world.
For hiking enthusiasts, Queenstown boasts incredible day hikes. The Ben Lomond Track is a challenging but rewarding full-day hike that offers stunning alpine views from the summit. It starts from the gondola base and takes about 6–8 hours round-trip, but the panoramic views over Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountains make every step worthwhile. For a shorter trek, Queenstown Hill provides a moderate climb with sweeping views of the town, lake, and Remarkables mountain range—an ideal option for those with limited time. The Moke Lake Loop Track is another great choice for those seeking a more leisurely yet picturesque experience, offering tranquil reflections of the surrounding mountains on the water.

On of my top activities of all time was the small plane ride to Milford Sound. It is an unforgettable experience that will raise a few hairs on your neck, but will not be soon forgotten. This once-in-a-lifetime adventure takes you flying over stunning mountain peaks, glaciers, and lush valleys. The view from above is nothing short of spectacular as you pass by snow-capped mountains, towering cliffs, and remote fjords. As you look over the wing, you’ll see endless waterfalls cascading down steep rock faces, offering a truly awe-inspiring scene that will stay with you forever.

Once you land, don't miss the chance to take a boat tour around Milford Sound. This is the best way to immerse yourself in the grandeur of the fjord. As you glide through the deep waters, you’ll be surrounded by dramatic cliffs that rise sharply from the water, some reaching heights of over a thousand meters. They look like teeth coming out of a giant mouth. The boat will take you past iconic sights like Stirling Falls and Bowen Falls, two of the most majestic waterfalls in the area, where you can feel the refreshing mist on your face. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as dolphins, seals, and penguins, which are often spotted in the fjord. The combination of sheer rock faces, lush rainforests, and the calm waters of the sound creates an atmosphere of tranquility, making this boat ride a serene yet powerful experience.
Although there isn’t much else to do at Milford Sound itself, the breathtaking beauty of the fjord, the proximity to glaciers, and the silence of the surroundings make it one of the most magical places on earth. This is an experience you’ll cherish forever and is a true highlight of any visit to Queenstown.
Back in town, start your morning with a coffee, or an afternoon cocktail on the lakeside promenade, soaking in the peaceful ambiance while watching the boats drift across the water. Queenstown’s waterfront buzzes with energy, and street performers often add to the lively atmosphere. Another unique local experience is feeding the giant eels at the lakeshore – an unexpected but fun activity, especially for those traveling with kids.
For those craving even more adventure, Queenstown offers skydiving, bungee jumping off the iconic Kawarau Bridge (home of the world’s first commercial bungee jump), jet boating through the Shotover River canyons, and paragliding over the lake. If you’re looking for something unique, try heli-skiing in winter. We were not adventurous enough to try any of these hair raising adventures, but a few friends partook and said it was the trill of a lifetime.
Wine lovers can take a short drive to the Gibbston Valley, where some of the best Pinot Noir in the world is produced. We stopped at the Gibbston Valley Winery for a wine flight and purchase a few cheeses and crackers from its adjoining store. Many vineyards offer wine tastings paired with gourmet platters, making for a relaxing afternoon escape from the town’s adrenaline-fueled activities.
For a more laid-back experience, take a lake cruise on the TSS Earnslaw, a historic steamship that takes visitors across Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak High Country Farm, where you can enjoy a traditional New Zealand BBQ and watch sheepdog demonstrations. This is a fantastic way to experience Queenstown’s stunning landscapes from a different perspective.

Fergburger – The Iconic Burger Joint
No trip to Queenstown is complete without experiencing Fergburger, often regarded as the best burger spot in New Zealand. With its massive, juicy burgers and endless options, this legendary eatery is worth the long queues. The Ferg with Cheese is a classic, while the Sweet Bambi (venison burger) offers a delicious local twist. If you’re extra hungry, go for the Big Al, a towering burger with two beef patties, bacon, eggs, and all the fixings. The lines are long and will sometimes wrap around the block, but it goes very quick, so it is worth the 15 or so minute wait. If you ever see a break in the line and are hungry at all, I say go for it. Your tummy will love you. For those short on time, grab a pastry or meat pie from Fergbaker next door, also an excellent choice for breakfast.
Tatsumi – Authentic Japanese Flavors
For top-quality Japanese food in Queenstown, Tatsumi is the place to go. This modern and elegant restaurant offers a refined selection of sushi, sashimi, and beautifully crafted bento boxes. Their sake pairing menu enhances the flavors of their fresh seafood dishes. Try their tuna tataki or the wagyu beef tataki for a melt-in-your-mouth experience. The tranquil atmosphere makes it a great choice for a relaxed yet sophisticated meal. This was one of our favorite meals here. Each dish was entirely unique and had a authentic yet unique flavor profile. Highly recommend this place.

If you’re craving a perfectly grilled steak, Flame Bar & Grill delivers. Known for its succulent ribs and prime New Zealand beef steaks, this South African-inspired steakhouse is a meat lover’s dream. Their rib-eye steak is cooked to perfection, and their famous pork ribs are fall-off-the-bone tender. Pair your meal with a local Central Otago Pinot Noir for the ultimate dining experience. Be sure to book in advance, as it’s a popular spot. If you are not able to get in, it is a fun spot for an afternoon beverage.
Rātā – A Fine Dining Experience
For a more refined and local dining experience, Rātā by renowned chef Josh Emett offers modern New Zealand cuisine with a creative twist. The menu highlights fresh, seasonal ingredients, showcasing dishes like braised lamb shoulder, venison tartare, and West Coast whitebait. The stylish yet relaxed setting makes it perfect for a special evening in Queenstown. Again book in advance especially if you are vacationing during high season.
Blue Kanu – Pacific and Asian Fusion
For a unique culinary experience, Blue Kanu blends Pacific and Asian flavors to create vibrant and delicious dishes. Their Coconut Crusted Prawns, Twice-Cooked Duck, and Hawaiian Poke Bowl are crowd favorites. Tucked away in a rustic stone cottage, The Cow is Queenstown’s best-kept secret for Italian cuisine. Their wood-fired pizzas and homemade pasta dishes are hearty and full of flavor. The intimate, old-world charm makes it a great spot for a cozy dinner, especially on a chilly Queenstown evening.

If you’re craving something sweet after a day of exploring, Patagonia Chocolates is the place to go for what many call the best ice cream in Queenstown. Located right on the waterfront, Patagonia offers an array of creamy, rich flavors made with high-quality ingredients. You can’t go wrong with their classic chocolate gelato or kiwi fruit sorbet, but their pistachio and hazelnut flavors are equally beloved. They will even hand dip your cone to your liking. It’s the perfect spot to grab a cone while strolling along the lakeside promenade, enjoying the beautiful scenery. If you can’t finish your huge cone, the local wildlife can help finish it off for you. For an even more indulgent treat, their hot chocolate, made with melted chocolate and served in a rich, velvety drink, pairs perfectly with any ice cream selection. Whether you're looking for a refreshing sorbet or a decadent scoop of ice cream, Patagonia Chocolates is a must-visit for those with a sweet tooth!
