Welcome to the Seychelles, an enchanting archipelago in the heart of the Indian Ocean. La Dique – Paradise Found:
There is no better place to begin our journey than with a visit to Anse Source d’Argent on La Digue, a beach so stunning that it has captured the hearts of travelers and photographers from around the world. As you step onto the powdery white sands, the gentle waves lapping at your feet, you will be mesmerized by the crystal-clear turquoise waters that stretch into the horizon. Unique granite rock formations create a dramatic backdrop, adding an element of surreal beauty to the scene. Relax under the shade of the palm trees, go for a swim in the calm waters, or simply bask in the glory of one of the world’s most picturesque beaches. If you are up for evn further adventure rent a bike and travel to the north side of the island to explore Anse Caiman Nature Trail and explore the secluded beaches of Grand Anse, Petit Anse and Coco Anse. Don’t forget to bring a jug of water, it can be quite hot, but the refreshing dip in the ocean when you arrive is a perfect way to cool off.
Snorkel or Dive in the Marine Parks – An Underwater Wonderland:
The Seychelles is renowned for its diverse and vibrant marine life, and one of the best ways to explore this underwater wonderland is through snorkeling or diving. The pristine coral reefs in the Sainte Anne Marine National Park and Curieuse Marine National Park are teeming with life, and snorkelers will be amazed by the kaleidoscope of colors presented by the corals and the myriad of fish species that call this place home. We saw endless marine wildlife and each location offered a different experience. The whale shark encounter was by far one of my favorite things that we experienced on this trip. For years we have been searching for this elusive majestic creature. Finally, for the first time we spotted one and we able to grab our equipment and jump off the boat to float in the near proximity of this curious, an awe inspiring once in a life time experience. For experienced divers, the Seychelles offers a chance to encounter majestic rays, curious turtles, hundreds of species of fish, creating unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime.
Cousin Island – Seychelles little Galapagos
Cousin Island, a captivating gem nestled within the Seychelles archipelago, is a small granitic island located just a short boat ride from Praslin. Designated as a reserve in 1968 for wildlife and conservation efforts, it stands as a remarkable success story in ecological restoration and protection. The island’s rich variety of flora and fauna includes rare and endemic species that have found a safe haven here. Birdwatchers are delighted to witness some of Seychelles’ most endangered avian treasures, such as the Seychelles magpie robin and the Seychelles warbler. These bird populations have thrived since the reserve’s creation, with the magpie robin population increasing from around 25 to approximately 300, and the Seychelles warbler reaching around 3,000. Each were previously almost extinct. Moreover, Cousin Island is renowned for its thriving population of sea turtles, with both green and hawksbill turtles frequently nesting on its pristine shores. We even got to witness one brave female hawksbill trudge of up steep embankment and start to dig out her secluded nest. During a guided tour around the island, led by knowledgeable conservationists, we gained valuable insights into the island’s conservation efforts and observed the remarkable wildlife that has flourished undisturbed for the last 50 plus years. For nature enthusiasts and those keen on conservation, Cousin Island is an absolute must-visit destination, offering a unique opportunity to witness the beauty of unspoiled nature in the Seychelles.
Aldabra Atoll – A Journey to the Remotest Island:
While it may not be easily accessible, a visit to the Aldabra Atoll is well worth the effort. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Aldabra is one of the most significant nesting sites for seabirds globally and is home to the incredible Aldabra giant tortoises. The only way to visit Aldabra is by joining an organized expedition, which will provide you with an extraordinary opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat, alongside the pristine beaches and lagoons that make this atoll a true hidden gem.
Fishing the Seychelles – Unforgettable:
Seychelles is often considered one of the world’s top fishing destinations. Whether you are a seasoned angler or a novice looking for a thrilling adventure, there is something for everyone here. The warm tropical waters teem with a variety of game fish, including marlin, sailfish, tuna, dorado and wahoo, making deep-sea fishing an exhilarating pursuit. While sailing from island to island we always threw out the custom-made fishing rig, consisting of heavy test hand line with a handmade lure, made out of shredded onion bags. The fish loved it and we typically hauled in about five skipjacks and dorado per sail. The extensive coral reefs offer excellent opportunities for reef fishing, where you can target species like snapper, grouper, and barracuda. Fly-fishing enthusiasts will find ample flats and lagoons, providing a serene and challenging environment to pursue bonefish, permit, and trevally. Many resorts and specialized fishing charters offer expert guides and top-notch equipment, ensuring a successful and responsible fishing experience. However, it’s crucial to adhere to local fishing regulations and practice sustainable fishing to protect the Seychelles’ delicate marine ecosystem for future generations to enjoy. Island Hopping – Exploring Seychelles’ Diversity:
With 115 islands to choose from, island hopping is a popular and exciting way to experience the diversity of the Seychelles. Each island has its distinct charm and allure, making it essential to include multiple destinations in your itinerary. We chose to use Dream Yacht Charters for a 10 day sailing experience, but I can’t exactly recommend them for the Seychelles. The vessel they provided was so out of date and poorly maintained that we actually requested that they give us a refund. We couldn’t even sail, due to sending us off with a broken mast, that we discovered it had been this way for years. However, our captain was fabulous and made the trip memorable. Mahé, the largest island, is the cultural and economic heart of the country, home to the capital city, Victoria, and some of the most luxurious resorts. Praslin, the second-largest island, is famous for the Vallée de Mai, as well as Anse Lazio, another stunning beach. La Digue, with its laid-back vibe and bicycles as the primary mode of transport, offers a glimpse into Seychelles’ simpler way of life. Silhouette Island, a nature lover’s paradise, captivates with its unspoiled beauty and diverse flora and fauna.
Watersports – Embrace the Ocean:
With its crystal-clear waters and calm seas, the Seychelles presents an ideal playground for water sports enthusiasts. From kayaking and paddle boarding to jet-skiing and sailing, the options are endless.
