Phuket is a tropical paradise that offers a perfect mix of stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and cultural experiences. Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or a bit of both, there’s so much to see and do. From exploring nearby islands to enjoying the lively atmosphere of Phuket’s towns, here are some of the best things to do in this beautiful destination:
A day trip to the Phi Phi Islands was one of the highlights of my time in Phuket. Known for their crystal-clear waters, dramatic cliffs, and white sandy beaches, these islands are breathtaking. I hopped on a speedboat tour, and my first stop was Maya Bay, made famous by the movie The Beach. The view of towering limestone cliffs surrounding the bay was absolutely stunning.
Snorkeling in the clear waters around Phi Phi Leh was unforgettable, with vibrant coral reefs and colorful fish everywhere. Phi Phi Don, the larger of the islands, has a more lively vibe with its beach bars and restaurants—perfect for a quick lunch break. The natural beauty and the laid-back atmosphere make Phi Phi a must-visit.
One of the best things about staying in Phuket is the easy access to some of Thailand’s most beautiful islands. I booked an island-hopping tour to visit a few of the region's gems, including Koh Yao Yai, Koh Khai, and James Bond Island (officially known as Koh Tapu).
The standout for me was Phang Nga Bay, where the towering limestone formations jutting out of the emerald waters felt surreal. Kayaking through the bay's hidden caves and lagoons was an adventure in itself. I loved the mix of peaceful beaches, remote islands, and the incredible seascapes I encountered along the way.
If you're looking for a lively beach experience, Patong Beach is the place to go. While it's known for its bustling nightlife, I found Patong to be a great spot for soaking up the sun, swimming, and enjoying some beachfront dining during the day. The area is packed with shops, bars, and restaurants, making it easy to spend an entire day there. After a day of sunbathing, I enjoyed strolling along Bangla Road at night, where the energy picks up with live music, street performers, and vibrant nightlife.
Phuket’s not just about beaches—it also has a rich cultural history that’s best explored in Phuket Old Town. Walking through the streets of Old Town, I was charmed by the colorful Sino-Portuguese architecture, trendy cafés, and boutique shops. The Sunday Walking Street Market was one of the highlights, offering an amazing selection of local food, handicrafts, and souvenirs. The old temples, shrines, and heritage buildings give the area a different vibe from the beach resorts and add a deeper cultural dimension to the trip.
No trip to Phuket is complete without visiting the iconic Big Buddha. Located on Nakkerd Hill, this massive 45-meter-tall statue overlooks much of southern Phuket, offering panoramic views of the island. The serene atmosphere made it a peaceful escape from the hustle of the beaches.
The views from the top were stunning, with the Andaman Sea on one side and the lush greenery of Phuket on the other. It’s also a great place to learn about the local culture, as the temple grounds are filled with informative signs about Buddhism and the importance of the site.
Phuket’s night markets are a great way to experience the local culture, food, and shopping scene. I spent a few evenings at the Phuket Weekend Night Market (also known as Naka Market), where I wandered through rows of food stalls and souvenir stands. The street food was the real highlight—delicious satay skewers, mango sticky rice, and freshly made coconut ice cream and our favorite, banana pancakes were just a few of my highlights. It’s a bustling and lively place, and even if you're not shopping, it’s a fantastic spot for people-watching and trying local delicacies.
For a more relaxed beach experience, I headed to Kata and Karon Beaches, which offer a quieter vibe compared to Patong. Kata Beach is great for surfers, especially in the low season when the waves are bigger, while Karon Beach offers long stretches of sand and fewer crowds. I enjoyed lounging on these beaches with fewer tourists around and taking in the sunset views.
